Investigation of wind energy potential areas from an aviation perspective
September 2025 | Safety Assessment
GfL conducted a study on the construction of wind turbines in two potential areas. The study was based on an analysis of obstacle clearance in relation to existing instrument flight procedures (IFR procedures) at a nearby airport. For the study, the areas were divided into grids and the maximum permissible construction height was calculated for each grid field.
In order to enable higher construction heights, GfL offers the development and validation of new IFR procedures, for example by modifying approach or missed approach segments. In addition, GfL provides support in the form of advice on how to proceed with the planning process and by organizing and conducting coordination meetings with airports, authorities, and German air traffic control.
We are also happy to investigate other potential areas for restrictions due to flight procedures and determine maximum building heights at planned wind turbine locations. Please feel free to contact us.
