Assessment of the maximum height of planned wind turbines in the vicinity of an airport
April 2025 | Safety Assessment
GfL prepared an assessment for another wind park developer in which the maximum height of planned wind turbines in the vicinity of an airfield with instrument flight rules (IFR) was determined.
The existing legal and operational restrictions (LuftVG, EASA, VFR, IFR) were examined and it was identified that instrument flight procedures were the most critical restriction. By constructing the procedure protection areas in accordance with ICAO PANS-OPS for each IFR procedure, the maximum construction heights could be calculated.
Finally, recommendations were made for possible further action, as well as an assessment of the approvability of larger, higher-yield turbines that would entail a change to the current IFR procedures.
