GfL contracted for glare assessment for photovoltaic panels at the Bundeswehr hospital in Ulm

August 2024 | Safety Assessment

The construction of a new multi-storey car park is planned for the Bundeswehr Hospital (BWK) in Ulm. An area of approx. 7500 m² is planned for the installation of photovoltaic panels (PV) on the roof of the car park. There are a total of three helipads in the immediate vicinity of the planned PV system, two on the premises of the BWK Ulm and another at the neighbouring Ulm University Hospital (UK).
As part of the project, GfL was commissioned by the Ulm State Building Authority to conduct a glare assessment. The objective of the report is to provide decision-making support for the planning of the PV systems.

Firstly, the frequency of reflections in the helicopter approach and departure areas is to be determined. In addition, glare probabilities for approaching and departing helicopters will be determined based on the prevailing flight operations.
Finally, the calculated risks are to be analysed and recommendations are to be made regarding the PV modules to be used, their orientation and/or shading provisions to be prepared.
