Nürnberg Airport assigned GfL to analyse the compatibility of the nearby forest “Reichswald“ with the safety of flight operations within an aeronautical study

February 2016 | Environment

The airport of Nürnberg faces the challenge to permanently comply with the international regulations of adequate obstacle clearance by EASA and NfL. Large forest areas of he Reichswald have been existing nearby the airport ever since and were temporarily assigned as special areas of conservation. In consensus with the responsible aviation authority, a forest clearing with minimal ecological interference has been permitted. For this, a sophisticated concept for the ecologically acceptable clearence of obstacles within the airport‘s obstacle management system has been developed. Despite these efforts, penetration of the named areas is likely to remain. GfL has been assigned to evaluate this matter wihin an aeronautical study (see here).
