Fraport assigns investigation concerning operational risks of subsurface constructions in the runway strip within the scope of veer off accidents

April 2016 | Safety Assessment

GfL has already conducted a safety assessment regarding the risks of runway strips with insufficient bearing strength at airport Frankfurt/Main in 2014. Building on that there is a need of further investigations concerning the safety impact of subsurface constructions (e. g. wells, drains, foundations etc.) in the runway strip’s area. Referring to this the safety assessment has to clarify whether subsurface constructions being non-compliant according to EASA CS-ADR-DSN (especially avoiding buried vertical surfaces by chamfering foundations in order to prevent collapse of landing gears during veer off accidents) induce intolerable operational risks. Therefore measurements of local bearing strength (CBR) in the vicinity of subsurface constructions will be carried out in cooperation with third parties.
