Obstacle investigation of wind turbines in the vicinity of airports

September 2023 | Safety Assessment

GfL was commissioned to investigate four locations of wind turbines in the vicinity of a commercial airfield in North Rhine-Westphalia. For this purpose, the planned wind turbines were analysed with regard to the so called Bauschutzbereich (building protection area) according to § 17 LuftVG, the obstacle limitation surfaces according to NfL I 92/13 (VFR) and the location of the aerodrome circuit procedure (NfL I 37/00). The conflicts identified were presented to the customer and solution scenarios were developed. The project is now moving into the next phase, in which an Aeronautical Study (AS) will be conducted to demonstrate the flight operational safety of the solution scenarios. The AS follows a standardized procedure for such studies, consisting of an assessment of the status quo of the current flight operational constraints, a hazard and risk analysis, and a final risk assessment with development of risk mitigation measures, if required.
